Gesture at Microsoft. Voice and spatial at Amazon. Design systems at the scale where craft either survives or it doesn’t. Now, agents. Twenty years and eight US design patents on one recurring question: how does a whole organization design well inside something new?

I lead design technology: the systems, governance, and tooling a design organization runs on, and the strategy for where AI belongs in that work. Most of my attention goes to a question I don’t think anyone has answered well yet. A design system assumes a designer decides what appears on screen. When a model decides, the system has to describe behavior rather than composition — how an agent proposes, how it shows its reasoning, when it defers, how a person corrects it. There’s no settled vocabulary for that. It’s the same problem I had on Kinect in 2009, wearing different clothes.

A deliberate year on AI
I stopped working for a year to learn this properly. MIT’s Designing and Building AI Products and Services, then months mapping the applied AI landscape across design tooling and operations — what was real, what was demo, and where design practice would actually have to change. I came out with a methodology and a practice at the intersection of AI, design systems, and design operations. Everything since has been built on it.

Nine years across Amazon’s Devices and Shopping organizations. I pioneered a new mobile design system architecture for Fire Phone — an Android UI wired to a custom 3D engine that generated every asset in real-time 3D, with AI-driven perspective tracking so the interface responded to head movement — and owned the design system, visual QA and UX writing for the Alexa app from the earliest stage of the program, the system and language layer of a voice-first product built before the patterns for one existed. In 2016 I founded and scaled the Bridge Team inside the Devices Design Group, growing it to 15–20 people with 5–6 direct reports across production, documentation, visual QA, UX writing and system design, serving Fire TV, Fire tablets, Alexa devices and emerging products. I finished by leading productization and governance for Rio, Amazon’s core design system and the one powering amazon.com.
